The water pump is a vital part required to circulate coolant around engine. Heat produced by engine combustion is absorbed by coolant which then passes through radiator to cool down before returning to engine. Water pump is situated between radiator and engine and driven by pulley & fan belt.

Engines stay cooler when the water pump causes coolant to circulate, however a leaking or failing pump due to the impeller simply rusting away or heavy corrosion of the body or bearing failure prevent this process from happening and can lead to serious over heating problems and usually occur when a engine hasn't been run in a long time with usually plain tap water in the system.
