The distributor is at the heart of the engine's ignition system. Its 3 basic functions are to trigger the firing of the ignition coil, to control timing advance, and to distribute the coils high voltage output to the individual spark plugs.

With points ignition, the contact points switch the ignition coil's primary circuit. The points are mounted on a movable plate in the distributor housing. Cam lobes on the distributor shaft rotate against a plastic block on the points to open and close the points. Lots to wear out and as you already know they have a tendancy to fail and let you down when you least expect it.

Electronic ignition is the answer for your Holden V8, this distributor contains an inductive pickup, instead of points to generate a signal for the ignition module, which in turn switches the coil. The ignition module itself is mounted on the distributor housing. No need to carry a set of points in the glove box.

This particular RAE distributor suits all Holden V8 Red Motors and will drop straight in with minimal extra wiring. Simply supply a full 12 volts to the positive on the coil.

The RAE distributor uses a female tower distributor cap, unlike most others on the market offering a male cap, meaning you can use your existing ignition leads. The benefit is you don't need to spend any more money on these items.

Bosch BIM024 ignition module

The Bosch BIM024 is much more than just an ignition switching power transistor module. It is more like a mini computer processor. In short, it not only switches the ignition coil’s primary current, it also has closed-loop control of dwell. It constantly monitors the coil current and adjusts the dwell accordingly, allowing for RPM, voltage, temperature and coil resistance.

This is critical at high RPM where dwell extension is limited to the spark time required for best combustion. Another feature is that it shuts off coil current when no RPM signal is seen (i.e. engine not running) ensuring no coil overheating if the ignition is accidently left switched on for long periods.

Many inferior aftermarket copies do not have many of these features. The BIM024 is designed to work well in both HEI (high energy ignition) and MEI (medium energy ignition) systems. It is also the module chosen by GM-Holden, Ford, Toyota and Mitsubishi etc. for many of their OEM ignition systems for carburetted cars.

To get the maximum out of the distributor It is highly recommended to install a 12 Volt Electronic Ignition Coil, which will deliver a higher intensity spark.
